CanSkate Program

We are offering both one and two day memberships for the full season or half a season!

Welcome to Meaford’s CanSkate program. The Canskate program teaches the fundamentals of skating... Agility, Balance and Control.

This program is best suited for skaters ages 5 to 12. For skaters ages 3 to 5, please register for our Pre-Canskate program.

In both programs, the skater work to achieve a variety of elements in each category and work towards earning ribbons and badges. Skills are taught in a circuit formation with motivating music and interactive games plus theme days through out the year.

The Coaches and Program Assistants work hard to keep each skater continuously moving 90% of the time.

Our program has received the "Excellence Exceeded" acknowledgement from Skate Ontario showing that our program is above their standards.

We strive to continue this and hope you give our program a try!

Who is the CanSkate Coach?

Kim Yzerman, Vanessa Hensel and/or Wendy Coupland

Kim is the Canskate Director and will be assessing the skill level of each child in CanSkate and placing the children in the appropriate skill group.  A Program Assistant will be assigned to each group of children and will assist Kim, Wendy and Vanessa in teaching the necessary skills at each level. Teaching is taught through circuit progressions, review stations, interactive games, movement and music.

What you will need for the CanSkate program?

*Warm clothes that allow easy movement of arms and legs
*Warm mitts – ones that wick away the water, not cotton.
*Properly fitted and sharpened skates – bob skates are not suitable as they can easily fall off
*Properly fitted helmet-All skaters in the CanSkate Programs Beginner to Stage 5 must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet to be permitted on the ice, no exceptions.
*Registration fees & bond payment authorizations must be received before your child(ren) are allowed on the ice.

*Extra mittens – ones that wick away the water, not cotton.
*Clean, dry towel for drying blades after each session, paper towels don’t soak up well enough.
*Skate guards- do not put guards back on your skates after you have skated, keep them off to allow for your blades and guards to dry.
*CSA approved hockey Helmet. Bike or ski helmets are NOT allowed.

What do I do when I arrive at the arena?

Skaters will get their skates on in the dressing room indicated on the monitor or in the lobby. Once the skaters are ready for the session they are to line up at one of the 2 ice entrances. No skaters are permitted to enter the ice surface until the CanSkate director comes to the door and asks them to go on. Parents and/or someone designated by a child’s parent must remain at the arena with their children during the skating session.
Please note that no one is permitted on the ice surface with or without skates unless they are registered with Skate Canada and fees must be paid in full.

Fundraising (Raffle Tickets - Basket of Cheer) = 1 hour/credit of volunteer time

Fundraising - To keep our program costs low we ask that each family sell $100 worth of tickets for the Basket of Cheer draw. These tickets are purchased at the time of registration and families have the option of selling them and keeping the funds or enter the draw themselves. The draw takes place in December for the 3 baskets.

9 week programs sell $50.00 worth of raffle tickets, again tickets are purchased and families keep the funds.

Volunteer Hours - New Sign Up Process ***

Volunteers are what makes this club survive and both a time or financial commitment from each family is a requirement with registration in all skating programs offered.

This year all positions will be posted here on our website under the "Volunteer" tab on the main page. Once completed, please check in with a Board member at the rink to get it recorded as complete.

Canskate – full season - 5 Volunteer Hours Required or $50 Buy Out Option
